Local company earns national award

Tigard, OREGON -- (Marketwire) -- 05/29/12 -- Agilyx Corporation in Tigard has earned a spot on the highly coveted Red Herring Top 100 List for developing the technology that makes premium synthetic crude oil from difficult-to-recycle waste plastic, effectively converting all types of plastic (#1-7) normally destined for landfills into an economical, domestic source of high-value crude oil.

Red Herring recognizes the innovations and technologies of emerging companies within their respective industries, and is a prestigious award for promising new companies and entrepreneurs that are leading the next wave of innovation. RH editors were among the first to recognize that companies such as Facebook, Google, Yahoo, Skype, Salesforce.com, and eBay would change the way we live and work.

Congratulations Agilyx Corp!  You're creating local jobs and addressing two important issues with one affordable, modular solution.

Youth Mentoring Program

It’s tough being a kid today. With an increased number of working parents, single parents, reduced community resources, school pressures or parents deployed in the military, kids may not have access to the support they need.

You can help. Do you have one hour a week to invest as a mentor?

The Tigard Police, Tigard-Tualatin School District, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and local faith-based organizations have joined forces to develop the Tigard-Tualatin Mentoring Partnership.

The partnership matches adult mentors (certified as Big Brothers or Big Sisters) to children and youth referred by school counselors. The program aims to serve 50 youth.

There are two ways to participate:
  • Community-based mentors spend approximately one hour a week with their Little Brother or Little Sister (ages 6-16) doing things that they both enjoy. This can be playing sports, attending a community event, or just having a milkshake and talking.
  • School-based mentors participate in programs operating at Bridgeport Elementary School in Tualatin and Metzger Elementary in Tigard. Mentors spend one hour per week, generally at lunch, meeting with a student.
Research shows that children who have a mentor—a consistent, caring non-family adult—are more confident in school; better able to get along with friends and families; less likely to skip school, use alcohol or drugs, or be involved with law enforcement; and more likely to graduate from high school and attend college.
